Bright Ideas competition for entrepreneurial students. Sponsored by STEM UEN, the competition is in its 8th year, and is open to students at seven universities in London.
This year, there were 171 entries involving about 244 students, who could enter individually or in teams. Many students entered as part of their degree programmes, while others are involved in entrepreneurs’ societies or enterprise mentoring schemes. Students ranged from Foundation degree to PhD level and crossed every discipline.
Awards were presented on Wednesday 15 February at a ceremony at the University of Westminster. First prize winners received £1,000 and the runners-up got £250 to help them further their ideas.
Martha Mador, Head of Enterprise Education at Kingston University, and manager of the West Focus Entrepreneurship Centre said: “Each year we get more entries, and the ideas become better and more diverse. They are often demanding and challenging ideas addressing genuine needs.”

Sleep apnea is a very serious condition that affects around 7% of the population, and can lead even to heart failure. With the proposed system the patient can record the sleep sounds he/she makes overnight using a mobile phone, After that, the sound recording will be uploaded to a website. The web app can extract sleep statistics and detect apneas. The final diagnosis is sent to an expert for verification, and also to the patient.

To continue to encourage enterprise in the UK, Marketest are running a Business Start-Up Competition. ‘RHUL Apprentice Challenge 2012′
The RHUL Apprentice Challenge took place over three gruelling weeks, with the final held last Tuesday.
Congratulations to Joe Shellard, Nimrod Szakacs, Yumeng Zhang and Fraser Ballantyne who formed the Team Red Dragons. They are team which shook Royal Holloway and its surroundings for 2 weeks!
The competition was tough and the Dragons actually lost in the first task, raising the least amount of money from the £50 they were given. However they pulled through and wowed the judges with their second and third tasks- forming a fantastic business strategy to turn around struggling pub Almamata.
The team were each given a LiveScribe Pen and a ticket to the University of London Apprentice finals.
A huge well done to all of the teams, and an extra cheer for them as they succeeded in raising over £700 for the Prince’s Trust!

This business game is designed to both teach you how to tackle common problems that businesses face, but also to give
you some practice with what you will face at an Assessment Centre, showing you how to demonstrate team work, developing your communication and presentation skills according to what employers want to see.

We are recruiting for a new Million Makers team! Million Makers are an enterprising group ofstudents at Royal Holloway who put their enterprising skills to the test to raise money for the Prince’s Trust in a short amount of time.
To join the team you must be available to attend the weekly meeting which will take place at 5pm every Monday in the Enterprise Lab, Orchard Building.
You must be committed to the team until the end of this term, but in return will gain invaluable skills and experience.
